Denver, CO – This morning Congressman Jared Polis announced his intention to join Colorado’s 2018 gubernatorial race. He enters into a crowded Democratic primary, joining fellow Congressman Ed Perlmutter, former state Treasurer Cary Kennedy, former state Senator Michael Johnston, and entrepreneur Noel Ginsburg in his bid for the office.

Congressman Polis is best known for his far-left stances in representing the 2nd congressional district, which includes Boulder. In his announcement email to supporters, Polis’ initial policy offering played straight to the environmental wing of his party, claiming he will ensure Colorado becomes entirely “energy independent,” utilizing 100% renewable energy by the year 2040.

“Congressman Polis is clearly taking aim at Congressman Ed Perlmutter by trying to run to his left,” said Kelly Maher, executive director of Compass Colorado. “In a state where Bernie Sanders overwhelmingly prevailed at the Democratic caucuses, this could be a successful strategy despite Polis’ early and steadfast support of establishment pick Hillary Clinton.”
