Another addition to the Democrat “endorsement arms race”

DENVER – Less than a day after Colorado’s most significant teacher union announced their endorsement of Cary Kennedy, former state Senator Michael Johnston one-upped her in the Democrat’s “endorsement arms race.” Author, speaker, and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg announced she’s launching the “Women for Mike” coalition in support of Johnston.

Colorado’s Democrat gubernatorial hopefuls, locked in a vicious multi-way primary, are in a race for any edge over their competitors. The Sandberg endorsement is particularly notable as it pulls from the natural constituencies of several of Johnston’s rivals.

Congressman Jared Polis bills himself as the “Silicone Valley, new economy, bitcoin” type – so Sandberg’s Johnston endorsement is sure to take some wind from that sail.

Cary Kennedy and Lieutenant Governor Donna Lynne are both vying for the women vote, and a high-profile woman like Sandberg giving the nod of approval to Johnston is sure to shake that, as well. Kennedy garnered the early support of EMILY’s list during her disastrous announcement while driving a vehicle in her neighborhood. Lieutenant Governor Donna Lynne announced shortly after that – even though she told Coloradans she wouldn’t run when accepting her current position.

“Sandberg’s endorsement is further evidence that Democrats are deeply divided and are no closer to coalescing around a leader,” said Kelly Maher, executive director of Compass Colorado.
